The Paleo Diet is a way of eating (I don’t like the word diet) that replicates how we used to eat in the wild as hunter-gatherers. Food allergies are due to IgE antibodies made for specific foods that an individual has for some reason developed because their body has misinterpreted the food(s) as a foreign invading protein. We all know that we shouldn’t get any sun though because that’ll cause skin cancer (please note the biting sarcasm here). Other sources of vitamin D are foods that few people eat enough of: eggs, liver, fish, oysters. Eggs are too high in cholesterol, liver is scary, fish tastes “too fishy,” and oysters are like snot. Of course, I only agree with the last one there, but that seems to be the general consensus. Dairy products are fortified with synthetic vitamin D, but you all know how I feel about foods that have to be fortified to have enough of something. If it requires fortification, it’s not a good source for that vitamin.

Despite vegan and vegetarian wishful thinking, some nutrients are simply not adequately represented in a vegetarian or vegan diet. Although the vegans will tell you otherwise, you simply can’t absorb any reasonable amount of bioavailable B12 from plant foods. Sorry. (And this is not just my opinion. The Encyclopedia of Dietary Supplements, put together by a blue ribbon committee of scholars from the National Institutes of Health says “Because vitamin B12 is found only in animal source foods, strict vegetarianism has long been associated with a greater risk of deficiency of this vitamin”.) Heme iron, the most absorbable form of iron, is found only in animal foods. And while vegetarians love to point to plant based sources of omega-3 fats like flax, the truth is that the overwhelming majority of studies on the health benefits of omega-3’s have been done on the two omega-3’s found in fish- EPA and DHA. The benefits of the omega-3 in flax, ALA, are far less clear.

For 28 days, I recommend you eliminate all grains, legumes, and dairy as well as processed foods. Foods in those categories are the most common foods that cause people problems. In those categories you find the foods that have commonly identified food proteins, lectins, gluten or casein that are known or suspected to cause symptoms. If you doubt me, think of people’s feelings toward those that hoard their food. Or people that refuse to eat other people’s food. The feelings attached to food and to the offering of food are why I will usually sacrifice my diet when someone puts in the effort to cook for me. If I go to my mom’s and she cooks spaghetti, I eat it. I may not always want to eat it, but the social aspect is more important than the food in that situation. Rejecting something that someone put the energy into making for you is generally taken as an insult if you don’t have an allergy to said food. To repeat: Colin Campbell’s book “The China Study” is not the actual China Study (also known as the China Project). The “real”, full-length study is titled “Diet, life-style, and mortality in China: A study of the characteristics of 65 Chinese counties Chen J.”; it’s an enormously thick and difficult book that gathered data on 367 variables across 65 countries involving 6500 adults and yielding over 8,000 statistically significant associations. The popular book “China Study” by Campbell represents, as mentioned, his conclusions about this data – conclusions which have been fiercely debated, by the way. He uses hand selected, cherry picked data from the study to support his rabid pro-vegan position and leaves out everything that contradicts it.

The “China Study” refers to a popular book that came out in 2005 by Professor T. Colin Campbell. Campbell was a researcher on a massive project called “The China Project” (also known as the China Study). Campbell’s book is not “The China Study” despite having the same name as the original. Rather, his book contains his conclusions about the research. Those conclusions can be summed up as this: protein is really bad for you, animal protein is the worst of all, a vegan diet is the healthiest diet on earth, and every nutrient you need you can get from plants.

But it’s almost impossible to point to a society or a culture that has thrived and prospered without eating any animal products. (The only group I can think of that does it successfully is Tibetian monks, and they don’t reproduce.) When Dan Buettner did his landmark research on the areas of the globe where there are the greatest numbers of healthy centenarians (areas known as “The Blue Zones”) he found that three of the four societies studied did indeed eat meat (albeit not that much of it). The only exception was the Seventh Day Adventists in Loma Linda.

As a physician with a quarter of century’s clinical experience behind me, 18 years of it as a dermatologist, I would affirm that I am personally convinced of a definite relationship, both positive and negative, between acne and food. Acne has a complex etiology, involving abnormal thickening and plugging of hair follicles, altered hormonal function, bacterial growth, and immune hypersensitivity. Individual variations due to genetic susceptibility, environmental factors and stress also affect the course of the disease. Hence any decisions regarding food restrictions in management of acne should be highly individualized and reviewed with care by the patient as well as the treating dermatologist.

Animal and plant sources of food both contain complex proteins known as lectins. These proteins typically have the ability to attach to sugars or carbohydrates on the surface of human cells. Some of these proteins can cause clumping of human red blood cells, a process that is called agglutination. The process of agglutination occurs when someone receives the wrong blood type during a blood transfusion. In fact, red blood cell agglutination specific to each person or groups of people is the basis for testing for blood types. There is some data that blood types may influence how people respond to certain foods though a blood type specific diet appears to have been disproven. The attachment or binding of certain food lectins can initiate a variety of cell specific effects. These reactions may mimic hormones or cause changes in cells. This is termed molecular mimicry.

Fulton et al (JAMA,1969) in a short-duration study of 65 patients, showed that there was no association between the consumption of chocolate bars and acne, sebum production and composition, and comedogenicity. Interestingly, the chocolate bars used in their study had very low milk component, in contrast to a typical chocolate bar of that period. The perceived association with commercial chocolate products may, therefore, be a result of the presence of milk in them. The above study has also been refuted by Bruce and Laila Mackie (Australian Journal of Dermatology,1974) for not making adequate allowances for the dietary properties of chocolate. They hypothesized that fats with higher melting points may reduce sebum flow, and thus cause the plugs to become comedones, the primary lesions of acne.

In another study, patients were fed large amounts of food that they believed exacerbated their acne, but no noticeable effect was found after one week.(Anderson PC, American Family Physician, 1971). One very important thing about fasting is that, while you can get away with less optimal food choices than you can on a normal diet, food quality makes fasting much, much easier. You can actually gain weight while fasting if you are loading up on sugary processed foods during your eating periods rather than focusing on quality meats, vegetables, nuts, seeds, and fruits.

If you are not familiar with the paleo diet, also known as the paleolithic, caveman or Stone Age diet, it is based on how humans ate before the Agricultural Revolution. When eating processed foods, try to pick those that have the fewest ingredients and minimal chemicals & preservatives. I prefer to choose packages that have only 1-3 ingredients listed. Again, I don’t like my flavors mixed. I would’ve rather had just a lemon or just a blueberry bar, but that’s just me.

As such, it is very important that you give enough attention to your snack choices. Make sure that you stick to the low carb snack foods. Here are some pointers to keep in mind. Many of the people that follow the Paleo diet are athletes and weight loss candidates. Personally, I believe that most people don’t give enough thought as to the inflammatory aspects of the food they eat. Chronic or low grade, long lasting inflammation, is believed to be the root cause of many age related diseases, (almost everything from arthritis to alzheimers, according to some sources). Some foods are inflammatory and some are anti-inflammatory. It’s always a good idea to balance the two as much as you can. There are vegetables that you can enjoy as low carb snacks. Mushrooms and radishes are perfect snacks when you feel like feasting. Even broccoli, celery and cauliflower will taste good when served with a low carb dip.

Cheese is also a good choice for the low carb snack food. There are manufacturers that can process the cheese so that the carb contents are very much minimized. This kind of cheese can be used as a topping for your sandwich or a mix to your salad. You can serve it in various ways like sliced or shredded. You also have a good choice from the cheese varieties. – These foods aren’t found at your local Grocery store, with that in mind you will have to go out to a farmers market, but hey whats so bad about that? In the process you will meet knew people and you will learn to shop for real natural foods.

As far as the snacks go, you’ll never mistake the cheese puffs for Cheetos, but they’re really not half bad. They kind of taste like the baked Cheetos. I also like the zesty herb snack mix because it reminds me of the chex mix I often make with my kids.


Normal Weight Obesity

In recent years it appears there is a rising epidemic of people suffering from chronic digestive and autoimmune conditions. Studies have shown that many acne sufferers have reported that when eating certain types of foods their acne condition worsened. The same individuals reported that when those same foods were eliminated and nutritional whole foods were introduced the acne subsided. No worry about food during the day – I can get up, run out the door to work, work all day, then go home to eat. I don’t have to be concerned with fitting in lunch and food is no longer the focal point of my day.

The terms food intolerance and sensitivity are commonly used interchangeably. They refer to a group of food reactions that occur that are not IgE antibody caused. In more general terms they refer to any adverse or unpleasant reaction that occurs after a food is eaten. Insulin resistance can incite acne lesions due to increased circulating androgens. Professor Loren Cordain is considered one of the leading experts on nutrition and he strongly recommends eating what he calls a “Paleolithic Diet” or Paleo Diet as it has become known. The same team led by Adebamowo, in a prospective study of US girls aged 9 to 15 years in 1996, found that greater consumption of milk was associated with higher prevalence of acne. They did not find an association with dairy fat contents and acne. They hypothesize that the association may be caused by the hormones and other bioactive molecules in milk, especially when most of the milk available in the market comes from pregnant cows.

Eggs are a great breakfast food. Forget what you have heard about eggs being bad for your cholesterol or that the yolk bad for you as it is full of fat – this is complete nonsense! Eggs are a great source of protein, essential fats, B vitamins, vitamin D and vitamin A. Eat them anyway you like except fried. First of all you have to decide how many calories you need to eat to lose weight. The average woman may burn 1700 to 2000 calories per day during normal daily activities. The average man, 2200 to 2500 calories each day. A pound of fat contains 3500 calories. You need to burn 3500 additional calories in order to lose one pound. If you reduce the number of calories that you normally eat by 500 to 600 calories you can lose that one pound in a week. A calorie based diet plan of this sort will allow you to lose weight and have a stable appetite during the day. If you’re a woman, create meal plans based on 1200 to 1400 calories per day. A man should plan on 1500 to 1800. Many people skip meals to save calories. This is a big mistake because it causes you to eat more at other times because of low energy and blood sugar levels. Instead of skipping meals, eat 4 to 5 times throughout the day. When you spread your calories throughout the day, you can keep up your energy level. Now I am not a doctor or dietician I am just a regular guy, who with his wife has tried nearly everything under the sun to lose weight and failed! This will allow you to do the calculations and the shopping and cooking more easily. It is of great importance to take account of the drinks’ calories and to include them in the count. It is best to have five meals every day – the three main ones and two snacks one in the middle of the morning and one in the afternoon. You should have a greater calorie intake in the lunch meal since it has to keep you full for the longest. The dinner should not be too restrictive either – include a variety of foods in small portions to make it healthy and tasty.

The Paleo diet is a derivative from the word “Paleolithic”, which was a certain time frame about 2.5 million years ago, but ended about 10,000 years ago. It is sometimes called the “ancestor diet”, due in fact that the foods used in the recipes for Paleo foods were actually eaten during the paleolithic period long ago. This includes drinks too! Occasionally, you can also enjoy pork, beef and chicken dishes; but nearly all of the fat must be excised before eating any of these meats. But since fat provides much of the flavor to food, low fat diets tend to be low taste diets as well. In other words, they’re boring.

Among the hardest parts about shedding weight is attempting to do everything on your own. A “Paleo Diet” or “cave man” diet is actually very similar to the bodybuilding diets I often recommend and this is most definitely a great way get very lean, very fast. But does the Caveman Diet come with side-effects? Is it really worth it? According to Robb Wolf, the only side-effect of following the Paleo diet and eating like a caveman is that it makes you a little bit more isolated from friends.
