Thus, the plantar fascia can be stretched comfortably during sleep at night. Flat feet is a condition in which the foot doesn’t have a normal arch. It may affect one foot or both feet. Most people have a gap between in the inner side of the foot and the ground when they are standing. This is referred to as an “arch”. Feet that have a low arch or no arch at all are referred to as flat feet or fallen arches. On standing the patient will have a flat arch and the foot may roll over to the inner aspect.

Another cause could be a chronic inflammation of the fascia causing the foot pain. Flat feet insoles have been used for years to help people with flat feet. Traditionally when we think of insoles or orthotics we think of a hard plastic insert that is placed in the shoe. It cups the heel and supports the arch but because it is not flexible it does not extend the full length of the foot. This tends to make this type of orthotic uncomfortable, and ineffective for many people.

They help to reduce the symptoms of heel pain and plantar fasciitis. These gel heel cups offer padding on the area of the pain in your foot. If you elevate the hind foot slightly, it will help in reducing the pressure on the plantar fascia, as well. The causes of Plantar Fasciitis are: aging, heel fat pad thinning, too low-arched or too high arched foot, weakness of the calf muscles, leg-length discrepancy, walking or running with inappropriate shoe type on poor cushioned surfaces, a change in the walking or running routine. In your case wearing high heels could have caused retraction of the plantar fascia, and now when you wear flat shoes the stretching of the fascia is what hurts.

The symptoms vary depending on the severity of the condition. Individuals may experience corns and hard skin under the sole of the foot. The arch area may be tender and shoes will tend to wear out quickly. In severe cases the patient may experience calf, knee, hip and back pain. Heel spurs are the result of calcium deposits that form on the underside of the heel bone. This calcium deposit usually occurs over the course of many months. Strains of the foot muscles and ligaments and the repetitive tearing of the heel bone membrane can lead to the build up of character. These bone spurs are often clearly visible on an x-ray.
