An expectant mom, who is 21 weeks pregnant, may have gained anywhere between ten and fourteen pounds. Her body is preparing not only for the big day, but to promote the healthiest baby possible. This is a great time for mothers to seek out childbirth classes. These provide excellent tools for the delivery experience, and ease feelings of nervousness. The doctor passes a fine needle either through the wall of your abdomen, or into the vagina and through the cervix, and uses an ultrasound scan to help her find the placenta so that a very small piece of it may be sucked out through the needle. The procedure can be uncomfortable, but isn’t normally painful. It takes from 10-20 minutes and is done in the out-patient clinic of your local hospital.

If you are more then 24 weeks pregnant, the risk of damaging your unborn baby while collecting the sample for testing is significant. So, doctors advise to stay till your baby is born to get the test done. After the birth of your baby, several methods can be used to take a sample from the baby. 6) Physicians need to order 2D ultrasounds at specific intervals during pregnancy. It is usually performed in a clinic, ultrasound imaging center or at a doctor’s office. In case of 4D scans, there is no need of any doctor’s order to perform it. Moreover, it needn’t be performed at a doctor’s clinic; it can be done at any private ultrasound business that specializes in 4D scanning.

Ultrasound remains the most reliable way to detect and monitor a multiple pregnancy. The routine use of ultrasound in prenatal care has reduced the number of surprise appearances by twins in the delivery room; most multiples are discovered during the first half of pregnancy. If you have a hunch or suspect that you are carrying twins or more, discuss your feelings with your doctor. At this stage, your baby is beginning to swallow fluid. His vital organs to include the intestines, kidneys, liver and brain are in the right place and will soon start to function, although they will keep on developing during your entire pregnancy. If you could just see your womb’s inside appearance, you’d recognize little details, such as nails forming both on his toes and fingers and hair starting to grow on his tender and delicate skin.

Weeks 17 – 24: This is the stage when your baby begins to really grow in weight. Reflexes develop along with ears and eyes as the baby’s greatest development takes place during this time. The critical stage of development is passed at twenty weeks and by the twenty-fourth week the baby’s heartbeat is strong enough to be heard by an ear pressed to your stomach. I know everyone worries that amniocentesis will cause a miscarriage, and that is very scary. But you have to understand where the data on the miscarriage rate from amniocentesis came from. In the early days of amniocentesis, they didn’t have ultrasound to guide where the needle went. So they just stuck it in and hoped they didn’t hit anything, like an arm or leg. Sometimes, though, they did.

If your pregnancy is between 10 to 13 weeks after conception, the method used to collect the sample for DNA Testing is chorionic villus sampling. In this procedure your doctor will insert a thin needle or a fine tube guided by ultrasound, into the womb through the vagina and cervix to obtain a sample of chorionic villi. The sample obtained will then be tested and analyzed. One question that comes up a lot is how often does an ultrasonic system need to be used? Ideally once installed, the unit will run continuously since it’s the consistent application of the sound waves that will ultimately damage the algae. Since cell algae, or the kind that can create green water, can sometimes be cleared in a matter of days. Other species like string algae may take a few weeks to several months.

At 5 months, the sex of your baby can usually be determined. A pregnancy ultrasound picture is a great thing to post on your refrigerator to get you through those last couple months of pregnancy.

Fetal viability is determined by several things, a positive fetal heart beat, a normal size yolk sac, and a single or multiple intrauterine pregnancy. The fetal heart beat is usually able to be seen by six weeks gestation with ultrasound. The yolk sac at about five weeks and a gestational sac in the uterus at about 4.5 -5wks from 1st day of LMP. If all of these things have been noted by 6-7 weeks of pregnancy the likely hood of a viable fetus and healthy pregnancy is 90-95%. Currently, at 17 weeks pregnant, your baby is approximately 4.5″ – 5.5″ long, and weighs in at 4-5 ounces. Doesn’t seem like much right now does it? Well, your baby is big enough to let you know its there on occasion. Of course, it will be a couple of more weeks before you feel a lot of movement, but right now you may notice a small movement here and there. With a stethoscope you will sure know they’re there. You can actively hear that heartbeat pumping back and forth.

Research from the National Organization of Mothers of Twins Clubs (NOMOTC) indicates that about half of multiples are born before 36 weeks gestation. There’s no way to know exactly when your babies will be born. In some cases, a premature birth can not be avoided. Some doctors feel that thirty-seven or thirty-eight weeks should be considered full-term for twins and will seek to prompt the delivery of the babies at that time. 3D images taken from a 4D scan can also visually clarify or determine the baby’s gender and heartbeat. These scans display the entire volume of the baby which is being examined, making it possible to analyze the tissue concerned. It further allows doctors and sonographers to analyze fetal motion, visualize the internal anatomy in every direction and perform exams previously unavailable.

So, if you want to know whether to purchase more pink than blue, this week could be a good time to schedule an appointment with your doctor. This will probably be the kind of test that you’re most familiar with. Ultrasound uses high-frequency sound waves, which create an image of your baby’s position, size and movements. Depending on the kind of tissue (bone, soft tissue or fluid) it will either appear white, gray or black. A good sonographer will be able to interpret the pictures for you.

The fetus is about 24 cm (9.4 in.) long, weighs about 800-1000 g (1 lb 12 oz-2 lb 3 oz), and is considered viable. From this time, a fetus’ death must be registered. It has been recommended that this should be brought down to 24 weeks, as some foetuses are viable at this stage. In a good special care baby unit a 28-week fetus has a 70 per cent chance of survival. As your uterus is now growing more and more, it is also shifting your center of gravity. You may feel like your losing your balance at times.
